MAXIMIZING MATERNAL TRAITS

Great calves have great Mommas!

Our breeding program focuses on maximizing maternal traits-an early maturing cow that raises a calf on her own, year after year. Fertility, Udder Quality, and Milking Ability are key traits in our herd. We utilize EPDs to maximize the Milk, Milk & Growth, Udder Suspension and Teat Size scores in our herd. In building our cowherd we have used the genetics of Largent and Sons of Kaycee, WY. The cows that we have purchased from Largent's have tight udders and good milking ability, are structurally correct and sound, have good dispositions, are able to withstand our harsh WI winters, are easy breeders and good mothers. When we combine the Largent genetics with today’s leading AI sires, the resulting calves are stellar individuals that will work in any environment.

IMPROVING CARCASS TRAITS

Studying EPDs helps us make smarter breeding decisions.

Balancing the maternal traits with carcass traits can be a challenge. We want easy calving, low birth weight calves, that grow quickly with high weaning and yearling weights. We also want larger rib eye and increased marbling. To achieve this challenging task we use many of today's popular AI sires including Churchill Red Bull, Churchill Sensation, NJW 73S M326 Trust 100W ET, H W4 Grizzly 0146 ET, and C R111 SENTINEL 2264 ET.  By studying EPDs to help inform our breeding decisions we can better balance maternal traits and carcass traits. To ensure the accuracy of our herd's EPDs we are TPR Whole Herd Breeders and also utilize AHA GE-EPD Testing.
